Drawers United

Updated: Jan 12, 2021

It used to be that kitchen drawers were for cutlery and cutlery alone. But drawers can be adapted to a number of uses. If you’re starting a new or starting over, of course you have more options than the average home owner for customising deeper and wider drawers for a variety of items. Nonetheless, you can still take advantage of drawer space to keep counters clutter-free.

A smartly designed in drawer rack lets you line up your spice bottles (up to 18) in the drawer so you can see and access them all. Labelling the top lid if they stand in a deeper drawer also allows you to see what you have.

Another great way to free up counter space is with an in-drawer vegetable stoarge option for onions, potatoes and other types that are kept at room temperature. By using wicker baskets set within the drawer, air still circulates to keep items fresh.

No drawer space to spare? Fake a drawer with baskets that slide on tracks just as a drawer would. You can utilise these under the sink for cleaning supplies, in base cabinets for pots and pans or even on the counter for everyday cooking supplies.

And if you are using your drawers for just cutlery, that’s ok too. Drawer organisers have improved over the years with several options that will expand to fit the width of your drawer and even fit those longer utensils.
